The West End bar has been a fixture on the Blantyre landscape for over 80 years.
The MacNeil family ran the pub for over 74 years before moving on in 2008. The story of the family’s association with The West End Bar began in 1925 when Captain Joseph MacNeil, a retired Merchant Navy captain, left the Isle of Barra with his wife Elizabeth to start a new life in Blantyre.
The couple bought a pub in High Blantyre from the Pearson family and renamed it the Caledonian, but locals knew the establishment as “the Hielandmans” in homage to Captain MacNeil.
They ran the pub for nine years before moving their business to Glasgow Road in 1934. They took over The Farmers Club, which is now known as The West End Bar.
The West End Bar entered a new era as it was taken over by another family steeped in the hospitality industry; Lisini Pub Co was established over 50 years ago by legendary ex-Celtic player Harry Hood. In those 50 years Lisini has gone from strength to strength and brought their stamp of quality to the grand old lady of Glasgow Road.
In mid 2019, Lisini leased the pub to General Manager, Jamie Duffy and his partner Jon McDowall. Their business, JOJA Pub Company Ltd has brought the venue into the current years, bringing back the long loved Thursday Quiz, Live Entertainment every Friday & Saturday and also offering free Function Room hire for all types of parties.
2020 brought new challenges for not only the hospitality industry with the outbreak of Coronavirus. Friday 23rd March the government instructed pubs to close with immediate effect and remained closed until July. During this time we took the decision to open for home deliveries kick starting a new way of working and setting a standard for many other venues in the area. In June we employed a team of builders, electricians and plumbers to renovate our lounge, knocking down walls, installing new fixed seating and redecorating throughout bringing The West End Bar into the 21st century.
2021 has started very challenging for the hospitality industry, with venues being closed for the first four months. We are pleased to announce that Beer Gardens will reopen on 26th April for three weeks and then indoor hospitality will reopen on 17th May.
We have spent a considerable amount of money and time investing in our out door area, creating a covered sitting area with lights, heaters and tv’s. We have also introduced new seating and an outdoor smoking area. These will be here for years to come and benefit our customers greatly, especially in the Scottish winter weather.
We are hoping that the remainder of 2021 will be a positive year for not only us but the full industry as we gain back some sort of normality.
The West End Bar has been at the heart of Blantyre for many years and will continue to be “the place to go”...
We look forward to welcoming you through our doors - YOU ARE ALL WELCOME!
